Callum Sultana: “The goal is to create the Best Game of the Year – every year”

Casino Guru News caught up with Relax Gaming Senior GPO Callum Sultana just in time for the release of Money Train 4, the acclaimed sequel to the eponymous franchise. Chatting with Sultana, the director explained what makes a great sequel and reaffirmed Relax Gaming’s commitment to building games from one iteration to the next. As Callum puts it, the goal of Relax Gaming is to create the Best Game of the Year – every year. Read our conversation with Callum in its entirety below.

Q: Money Train 4 is just around the corner with a new train heist saga entering the slot scene. Why do we need a fourth sequel in what has been clearly a very well-received game by players?

I think it’s fair to say that Money Train has been one of the biggest series of games to have launched in the gambling industry and we have achieved something quite unique by always having a bigger release than the last one! This achievement didn’t happen by accident of course, we have been paid a lot of attention to what makes a successful sequel within the industry but also outside of it and we believe that a big part of that is striking the right balance between adding new elements to the game as well as retaining some familiarity.

We took our time with each Money Train release, ensuring we had a strong new mechanic that we believe to be better than its predecessor. Topping a multi-award winning, record-breaking title is no easy feat, so the stakes were at an all-time high with Money Train 4. We really do believe this is going to be the best iteration yet and we couldn’t hold it back any longer!

Q: How is your newest title different from the previous games you have developed? Did you factor in player feedback from the previous game, or did you have a ready-made formula for the newest release?

Any great sequel needs to find a balance between familiarity and new additions, this is something we have taken very seriously whilst building the series. With Money Train 4 we have probably changed a bit more than in the previous games as we have increased the amount of features in the bonus game from 13 in the prequel to 20, so you will see a mixture of re-invented features like the adjacent payer and adjacent collector along with some exciting new features like the Upgrader and our latest addition to the gang - the Arms Dealer.

The Base Game was a key area of improvement that we knew players were waiting for, so naturally that is where they will see the most change. We have left the traditional line game behind and upgraded it with a Scatter Pay mechanic that we’ve borrowed from some of our other successful titles. We’ve also added a new Re-Spin feature that is triggered 1 in 25 spins on average that comes close to hitting the max win of the first game in the series!

Q: What is the goal with the release of new instalments in the series? Do you want to retain its freshness or are you realizing a deeper design that you had in mind?

The goal for us is to create the best game of the year, every year. Above all else, we’re players ourselves and we love playing these games as much as anyone else so we’re always thinking about ways to improve a product and make it more entertaining. Money Train having such a large following allows us to also see what players liked and disliked first-hand so in a way, that has also been a great motivator for us as at the end of the day we make these games for people to enjoy.

Q: What do you think Money Train 4's biggest pull with players will be?

Money Train has always allowed players to experience their own unique story as there are so many different ways to achieve a big win and I believe Money Train 4 delivers that and then some! With the bonus game boasting 20 features, every max. win experience can be very different to the last, despite the fact that they happen very often for 150,000x! I believe that this really keeps the game fresh and has always been the biggest pull since you just don’t know what to expect until it happens!
