Wife thinks husband is joking after $50K lottery win

A scratch-off ticket that cost only a few bucks brought a sweet five-figure prize to one Maryland man.

However, as the lucky winner told his wife about his newfound fortune, she initially thought that he was joking.

Winner scored one of the top prizes from Deluxe Crossword

The winner, an automotive worker who chose to remain anonymous, purchased his $5 Deluxe Crossword ticket from Wheaton Winery at 2211-B University Boulevard in Silver Spring.

The fortunate Rockville man said in an interview for the Maryland Lottery that he prefers time-consuming and challenging scratch-offs.

"I only play two scratch-offs. Crosswords and bingo scratch-offs. I like the surprise of those games," the man said.

Buying the Deluxe Crossword ticket, the man decided to scratch it off once he was back home.

Matching eight words resulted in a $50,000 win from the popular ticket.

"After I saw it, I was screaming," the lucky man said, recalling the moment of the win.

He immediately called his wife to give her the good news. However, his spouse initially didn’t believe her husband.

The couple visited the Maryland Lottery headquarters to claim their newfound fortune and the woman said: "I didn’t think it was real. I thought he was joking with me."

Asked about their plans for the lottery windfall, the couple confirmed they plan to set the winnings aside into savings.

The $5 scratch-off ticket offers a range of prizes

The $5 Deluxe Crossword is in its 10th edition, and each ticket grants players a chance to win a prize between $5 and a top prize of $50,000.

After the most recent top prize win, three prizes of $50,000 each remain in play.

A tier-two prize from Deluxe Crossword awards $10,000 and out of 14 such prizes, three are still up for grabs.

Lottery players can also win a tier-three prize of $1,000 from the $5 ticket, and there are 15 such prizes that are yet to be claimed.

The overall odds of winning any prize from Deluxe Crossword are 1 in 3.47.
