An Oakland County, Michigan man has quite the story to tell after he was "mistakenly" given the wrong lottery ticket, which was the best thing that could have happened to him, as the honest mistake led to a seven-figure payout.
The 68-year-old player scooped a $1.05m lottery prize after he played the Detroit Lions Rush for Riches game, having received the lottery by accident due to a clerk error, but ending up with a massive payday all the same.
The player usually tells clerks not to give him the Detroit Lions game, as he has hardly had any luck playing it, but this time he forgot.
"When I buy Fast Cash tickets, I hand the cashier money and tell them to give me any of the Fast Cash games, but lately I’ve been saying any except the Detroit Lions game because I hadn’t been having luck with it," the winner explained.
The player purchases lottery tickets when the Fast Cash instant-win jackpot exceeds $700,000, the lottery confirmed, relating the winner’s words. The man himself has preferred to remain anonymous.
There were details to share all the same. The ticket was purchased at a Speedway gas station on Pontiac Trail in South Lyon on June 6, with the man unable to believe his luck at first.
On the day of the win, however, the player forgot to tell the clerk not to print the Detroit Lions game and just like that - the teller did.
"I forgot to tell the cashier that this time, and the Detroit Lions game is what he printed for me," he explained.
But the player did not realize he had won right away- instead, he found out the next day, when he looked over his ticket.
"I stopped my wife as she was walking by, handed her the ticket, and said: ‘You’re not going to believe this!’" the man said. "Once she saw what I’d won, she started crying. It was an exciting and emotional day for us," the man recalled.
As to his mistake not telling the clerk not to print the Detroit Lions ticket? He has been thinking how glad he was he forgot to tell him to avoid that particular game. With his newfound money, the winner will be taking good care of his family.
