A Michigan football fan recently saw his favorite team, the Detroit Lions, lose a playoff game.
However, the day before the game, the man, bought a scratch-off ticket that pleasantly surprised him with a hefty win.
On Thursday, the Michigan Lottery confirmed that a Wayne County man, who chose to remain anonymous, scored the first top prize from the popular instant game, VIP Cashword.
The lucky lottery player purchased his winning ticket at the Marathon gas station on 22063 Ryan Road in Warren.
The Wayne County man made the purchase the day before the playoff game between the Lions and the Washington Commanders last month.
While he didn't like the outcome of the playoff game which resulted in a loss for the Lions, once he scratched off the ticket, his smile returned to his face.
This was because he won one of the game's top prizes for a sweet $500,000 payday.
Speaking to a lottery official, the Wayne County man said: "Of course, everyone knows how the Lions game went but scanning the ticket and seeing I won $500,000 took some of the sting away!"
Moreover, the lucky player added: "It still doesn’t feel real that I won, but I am very excited to be able to help family and then tuck some money away for myself."
While the Wayne County winner recently visited the lottery headquarters to claim his big prize, he didn't disclose if he had any plans regarding the win with the exception of the hint that he will save some of it and help his family.
In October last year, the Michigan Lottery announced the launch of VIP Cashword game.
The recent $500,000 win marked the first top prize out of a total of three.
A tier-two prize awards $1,000 and while at the start there were 48, now, 34 such prizes remain in play.
Each ticket costs $10 and offers a chance to win a wide range of prizes starting from $10 up to $500,000.
The overall odds of winning any prize from the VIP Cashword instant game are 1 in 3.47.
