A fortunate couple from Maryland is planning to retire relatively soon after winning a million-dollar prize from a scratch-off ticket.
On Thursday this week, the Maryland Lottery confirmed that a lucky Harford County man scored one of the top prizes from MONOPOLY X100, a popular scratch-off game part of the fan-favorite MONOPOLY series licensed by Scientific Games.
A statement released by the Lottery confirms that the fortunate winner decided to accept the prize while concealing his identity under an alias, "Corbin Martin."
The fortunate Aberdeen resident admitted that the chosen moniker has special meaning to his family.
Asked by a Lottery official if he is a fan of the lottery, the lucky man said that while he usually buys Mega Millions and Powerball tickets, he isn't much of a fan of scratch-offs.
"I’m not a big scratch-offs player," the Aberdeen resident admitted.
This didn't stop the man from trying his luck with the $20 ticket, MONOPOLY X100.
The player's life-changing prize came after he faced misfortune.
The Harford County man told the Maryland Lottery that his car broke down and he left it for repairs at a shop.
Checking on the progress of his car, the man borrowed his mother's car to go to the repair shop. However, "Corbin Martin" saw that the car's tires were low on air which is why he decided to stop at the Royal Farms store at 3710 Churchville Road in Aberdeen.
There, the man put air into the tires, bought a soda and with the $20 left in his pocket, purchased one MONOPOLY X100 instant ticket.
While he bought the scratch-off ticket, the man didn't think much of it and once he was back home, he handed it to his wife.
Once she scratched off the ticket, she told him that the ticket was a $1m winner.
The man recalled the exact moment he was told they won $1m dollars which got him thinking that his wife pranked him.
"This is unbelievable. What a feeling," the lucky player added.
The couple recently purchased a house and admitted that they will use a large portion of the newfound fortune to settle that debt.
However, they also confirmed plans for retirement in about seven years.
Looking into the future, the fortunate couple said they also want to build a house in the Philippines.
The recent top win marked the first grand prize won from MONOPOLY X100.
The game was launched on January 13, 2025, and it initially offered six top prizes but now five prizes of $1m remain in play.
Six out of six tier-two prizes of $50,000 remain in play, while 11 out of a total of 12 tier-three prizes of $10,000 each, along with smaller prizes are also up for grabs.
The overall odds of winning any prize from the popular game are 1 in 3.12.
