The National Football League (NFL) has been rocked by a string of scandals over the past months with several players found to be in breach of gambling regulations. The NFL does not permit players, athletes, and staff to gamble on the outcome of league games, or any sport for that matter during specific times.
However, there have been a string of incidents recently, that prompted the NFL to issue a stricter response. Tom Brady, a former quarterback for the New England Patriots, is now reportedly a part of this commitment to ensuring that NFL athletes understand gambling policies better.
The prohibition on gambling on other sports is not so difficult, with the league restricting athletes from gambling on any sports while at their team’s facility or when travelling with their teams. The NFL is now keener to ensure that athletes understand that.
Brady is said to be a part of a new video which is used as part of the league’s efforts to educate players on how not to breach gambling rules. Although this video is still just the subject of media speculation, and sources close to the matter, the material itself seems to feature the GOAT, as Brady is known for his American football successes, in addressing players.
He reportedly urges players to stop and think where they are and consider the privilege it is to be a part of the NFL. Brady himself is quoted as saying that having had the opportunity to play in the NFL was the chance of a lifetime.
However, to ensure that the NFL remains the place it is today, athletes need to understand that by betting on league games they are hurting the organization, and its players, and undermining fans’ trust in the game as a whole. The NFL will now be making sure that every player undergoes gambling training so that they cannot deny knowledge of the rule as have some of the most recently caught and investigated players.
Over the past weeks, many players have been investigated, including five players from the Detroit Lions, who have been found to be in violation of league rules and issued the appropriate response.
The Detroit Lions are not the only ones to face controversy of this sort, though, as Indianapolis Colts kick returner Isiah Rodgers was also named as one of the players to be investigated. Rodgers has since released a series of apologies over Twitter, saying that he will do everything in his power to ensure that this situation does not happen in future.
