To many football fans across the globe, the name Joey Barton needs no introduction. The former professional football player and English professional football manager has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media and is renowned for his exceptional talent and candid public commentary.

Born on September 2, 1982, Barton's professional football career began with Manchester City. Because of the accident and his admission to bodily harm after assault on Dabo, Joey Barton received a four-month suspended sentence on July 1, 2008. Again, in 2008, Barton was sentenced to six months in prison after a separate assault and affray accident in Liverpool.

This resulted in legal issues as he faced 12 counts of sending grossly offensive electronic communications with "intent to cause distress or anxiety."

After pleading not guilty to all 12 counts, the lawsuit against Joey Barton went to trial. On November 7, 2025, a jury found the former Manchester City midfielder guilty on six out of 12 counts of sending grossly offensive communications. Then, on December 8, 2025, Joey Barton was sentenced to six months in custody, suspended for 18 months, a statement from the Crown Prosecution Service confirms.
