The betting scandal affected a range of players from Avellino, Milan, Lazio, Bologna, as well as Perugia from Serie A, along with Serie B teams Palermo and Taranto. Milan's President, Felice Colombo was expelled from his role due to the scandal, while Bologna's President, Tommaso Fabretti, received a one-year suspension.

For nearly five decades, the only legal form of sports betting on football in Italy was called Totocalcio. As a state-run pool for wagering on the popular sport, football fans were given a chance to pick the outcome of 13 games correctly. Considering the number of games, match-fixing wasn't an option, which is why individuals who sought to manipulate football games for monetary gain had to use illegal bookmakers.

That's the case for Alvaro Trinca, as well as his accomplice, Massimo Cruciani. The duo created a plan in 1979 to fix football games and award the players, who agree, with a share in winnings. Considering that Trinca owned a restaurant in Rome and this venue was popular among Lazio players, it didn't take long for his plan to kick off.

While some of the matches fixed by Trinca and Cruciani were played as planned and brought winnings, most of them didn't. According to media reports at the time, the duo lost more than 100 million lire until February 1980, which is roughly estimated at $500,000 or more, as of 2025.

Then, at the beginning of March 1980, Trinca and Cruciani reported their actions to Rome's Public Prosecutor. They filed a list with the 13 clubs from Serie A and Serie B involved in the match-fixing scheme. This list included a total of 27 players, all of whom received different penalties varying 3-month suspensions to 6-year suspensions.

Not unexpectedly, Paolo Rossi was also honored as the best player of the tournament with the Golden Ball Award, a recognition also popular as "Ballon d'Or". Again, in 1982, he won the World Player of the Year award, highlighting his exceptional performance and accomplishments.

In the same year, he won Onze d'Or Award, a recognition also known as Onze Mondial European Footballer of the Year. This is one of the most prestigious football awards, and it honors the best players in Europe since 1976.

Currently, the highest number of Onze d'Or accolades is held by the football legend, Lionel Messi. Also on the list, together with Paolo Rossi are Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Hristo Stoichkov and Ronaldo.

Another legendary player that made the list is Michel Platini, who won Onze d'Or after Paolo Rossi in 1983. Platini's dominance continued with two more awards won in 1984 and 1985, before Onze d'Or was won by Diego Maradona in 1986.

Paolo Rossi was awarded Ballon d'Or on December 28, 1982, with 115 points, recognizing him as the best football player in Europe.

Paolo Rossi lived up to the age of 64, before passing away on December 9, 2020, in Siena, Italy. Recognized as one of the best football players in Italy and Europe, Paolo Rossi legacy inspires many football fans to this day.

Despite the difficulty he faced in light of his temporary two-year suspension over the betting scandal, Paolo Rossi rose to fame and his success in football is recognized internationally.
