Las Vegas offers something for everyone

Still, many can't help but wonder why is Las Vegas so popular. One of the reasons is because it combines a range of entertainment, hospitality and gaming options or to put it simply, Las Vegas has something for everyone.

Although generally speaking the city isn't the best place for children, many of the luxury resorts offer a range of child-friendly activities. With that in mind, the plethora of entertainment and nightlife activities remains the strong side of Las Vegas.

The city's iconic Strip is the home to luxury hotel and casino resorts that offer unrivaled entertainment and unforgettable experiences.

Las Vegas is recognizable for its vibrant lights, massive hotels and casinos that feature different themes and of course, a range of gambling options.

Visitors to Las Vegas can enjoy a wide range of activities

But what does Las Vegas have to offer? There are several unique features Sin City is known for. Here's a list that isn't exhaustive but outlines some of the highlights of why Las Vegas is so popular and what are some of its main advantages:

  • A wide range of gambling options
  • Luxury accommodation and hospitality
  • World-class entertainment
  • Bars, restaurants and fine dining outlets with unique themes
  • Numerous shopping outlets, high-end venues, boutiques and outlet malls
  • Indoor and outdoor sightseeing opportunities

Nevada: a gambling pioneer

Casino gambling, including slots, live table games, like roulette, poker, blackjack, craps, as well as sports betting definitely contribute to why Las Vegas is so popular. In that line of thought, Nevada was the first US state to legalize most forms of casino gambling.

The legalization of the activity nearly a century ago, in 1931, came as a response to the Great Depression. What's more, Nevada was the only state to offer legal gambling options for 20 years before legal slots appeared in Maryland in the 1960s. Atlantic City in New Jersey was also among the first US states to offer gambling but that happened after the legalization of the activity back in 1977.

Besides gambling, in 1931, Nevada significantly relaxed its laws related to marriage and divorce. Since then, Las Vegas has gained popularity as a wedding destination while many of the gaming and hospitality operators offer special packages for couples.

Although in the 1960s and 1970s, many of the casinos in Las Vegas were suspected of ties to organized crime, in the decades that followed, the mafia's grasp grew weaker. At the same time, more luxury casinos and hotels opened their doors, paving the way for a highly competitive market that demands all legal action.

A brief history of Las Vegas

Las Vegas was officially established as a town back on May 15, 1905. Four years later, Clark County was created. During the same year, Nevada banned gambling. As noted, the ban was lifted in 1931, some two decades later.

According to a timeline by the Las Vegas Sun, the population of Las Vegas as of 1930 was only 5,165 people, while the total population of Clark County was 8,532, while in 1950, the population of Sin City had grown to nearly 25,000 residents.

By the new Millennium, the population of Las Vegas had grown exponentially, the ties between organized crime and casino resorts were gone and some of the landmark luxury hotels and casinos had opened their doors for visitors.

The list of luxury hotels and casinos includes the world-renowned Mandalay Bay, The Venetian, The Bellagio and The Paris Hotel and Casino. The opening of The Palms Casino in 2001, Wynn Las Vegas in 2005 and Red Rock Casino in 2006 helped further shape the Las Vegas Strip by delivering exceptional entertainment, gambling options and supreme hospitality.

According to Macrotrends data, the population of Las Vegas kept growing to an estimated 2,953,000 people as of 2024.

Sin City's mayor played a key role in boosting its popularity

Undoubtedly, the continuous expansion of Las Vegas and the introduction of luxury amenities, entertainment and gambling activities are among the reasons why is Las Vegas so popular today.

With that in mind, some politicians played key roles in helping Sin City gain popularity. An honorable mention is Oscar Baylin Goodman, a famous American attorney and politician who was the mayor of Las Vegas between 1999 and 2011.

Per the current rules, mayors can only run for three terms. Goodman achieved that and during his time in office, he strived to make Las Vegas even more popular by attempting to attract sports franchises.

During his career as an attorney, Goodman was recognized for representing suspected organized crime figures, including Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, Stardust Casino's former exec and famous professional sports bettor, Phil Leonetti and Meyer Lansky, among others.

After Goodman achieved his maximum term as a mayor, the strategic role came into the hands of his wife, Carolyn Goodman who assumed office on July 6, 2011. While Oscar Goodman attempted to draw sports franchises in order to boost the popularity of Las Vegas, this was achieved about a decade later, following PASPA's repeal in 2018.

Conventions are a major reason why Las Vegas is so popular

Besides luxury accommodation and casino gambling, another reason why Las Vegas is so popular is its capability to host major conventions. Global convention events attract visitors and companies from all across the globe.

According to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the annual total visitor volume for Las Vegas in 2023 was 40.8 million. A year-over-year comparison showed that this number marked an increase of 5.2%.

Notably, the number of visitors who came to Sin City for conventions was a whopping 6 million in 2023. A comparison to 2022 showed that convention attendance increased by nearly 20% during last year.
