Maris Catania, one of the leading experts in responsible gambling and social responsibility, discusses how the Casino Guru Awards has evolved, and what role data-driven RG initiatives, and AI have in shaping the future of safer play. Catania shares key insights for applicants looking to stand out, focusing on transparency, innovation, and a genuine commitment to reducing gambling harm. As she puts it, the real MVP in this equation is the customer. Read on to find out what Catania thinks on some of the most pressing issues of our industry, and the Casino Guru Awards 2025.
Q: Maris, the Casino Guru Awards are set to be bigger, better, and more exciting than ever before, with the first live ceremony scheduled for June 6, 2025, at the Hilton Malta. What are your initial thoughts on how the format of the awards has evolved since you joined as a judge?
A: I think the awards have evolved significantly over the years, and it’s really encouraging to see the progress that has been made. The shift toward enabling live events is a testament to how much importance is now being placed on celebrating achievements in the industry. It’s especially gratifying to see events that highlight and give due recognition to responsible gambling initiatives, which are so vital to fostering a safer gambling environment.
Q: With nominations now open until the end of February 2025, what advice would you offer to companies aiming to be recognized in the Best Implementation of RG Tools or Most Impactful Social Responsibility Initiative categories?
A: My best advice would be to provide as much detailed information as possible. It’s important to go beyond general descriptions and focus on presenting clear evidence, particularly through numbers and effectiveness measures. This demonstrates not only that there is monitoring in place but also a genuine commitment to improvement. The key is to show that your efforts are not just lip service but reflect an authentic and ongoing dedication to responsible gambling.
Q: In your opinion, have the Casino Guru Awards effectively communicated the level of commitment required for applicants to stand out in the selection process? Do you believe the awards have successfully raised the bar in these critical areas of responsible gambling and social responsibility?
A: Overall, yes, I believe the Casino Guru Awards have done a good job in highlighting the level of commitment needed for applicants to excel. While awards like these can certainly help raise the bar, it’s crucial for operators to remember that the real MVP in this equation is the customer. Ultimately, their well-being and trust should remain at the heart of any initiative, ensuring that responsible gambling and social responsibility efforts are meaningful and impactful.
Q: Given the rise of technologies like artificial intelligence and ongoing regulatory changes across various global markets, do you think companies will need to rethink their strategies for the categories you judge? You recently spoke about this topic at IAGR Rome 2024; could you share some key insights and explain how applicants can benefit from these trends?
A: When it comes to AI and regulatory changes, my main concern, something I also highlighted at IAGR Rome, is that the term "AI" is often used so loosely that, in many cases, it’s not truly accurate. We need to move away from overselling what we’re doing in this space and instead focus on sharing best practices that can drive meaningful improvements in consumer protection. Another area to consider is the role of cyberpsychology, as it provides valuable insights into how consumers interact with and experience the industry. Incorporating these elements into strategies can help applicants stand out while genuinely enhancing their impact.
Q: Casino Guru has worked hard to establish a platform through the Casino Guru Awards that helps drive positive change in the gambling industry. As a judge in two of the most influential categories, do you feel the project has succeeded in this mission? Do you personally feel you are contributing to meaningful change within the sector through your involvement?
A: I think it’s great to see these types of categories in the awards, as they recognize and celebrate important work in the industry. What I appreciate the most, though, is the ethical and transparent judging process. Judges are encouraged to have open discussions and point out any issues, which ensures that the process is thorough and fair. Through this approach, I do feel that my involvement contributes to meaningful change by promoting accountability and excellence within the sector.
Q: As a judge for the Casino Guru Awards, what specific criteria or metrics do you prioritize when evaluating nominees in the categories related to RG and social responsibility? What trends are you seeing in this space that you think will shape the future of the industry?
A: I prioritize originality and data-driven initiatives when evaluating nominees. I have a strong preference for proactive responsible gambling approaches, particularly those that focus on markers of harm and corresponding interventions. It’s also important to see measures in place to assess the effectiveness of these initiatives and a commitment to going beyond basic regulatory requirements. Looking ahead, I think the industry will continue to shift toward innovation and personalization, with a greater emphasis on using technology to identify and address harm earlier and more effectively.
Q: Looking back at 2024, how would you assess the development of responsible gambling tools and social responsibility initiatives? Are there any standout projects or initiatives that have particularly caught your attention as meaningful and impactful?
A: As a consultant, I’ve had the opportunity to observe a wide range of initiatives and ideas across different companies, all of which deserve some level of acknowledgment for their efforts. However, what has truly caught my attention is the shift in perception among students I teach in cyberpsychology at the university. Their evolving ideologies and perspectives on responsible gambling are both humbling and, at times, concerning. It’s a reflection of how the younger generation is grappling with these complex issues, and it emphasizes the need for continued education and awareness in this area.
