LuckyHills: "Fair T&Cs do not automatically translate into player understanding"

LuckyHills recently won the Casino Guru Awards in the Fairest General T&Cs category. Casino Guru News sat down with the casino to discuss how an operator in modern iGaming builds terms and conditions that put players first even when players don't actively read the T&Cs. Central to LuckyHills' approach is a clear-eyed understanding of player behavior tthat fair T&Cs, as they know well, do not automatically translate into player understanding.

Congratulations on winning one of the most challenging categories at the Casino Guru Awards — The Fairest General T&Cs. Was that a category you felt, from the start, that you had a good chance of securing?

From the outset, our focus was never on winning an award. Our priority was to ensure that our T&Cs were genuinely fair, transparent, and designed to align with player protection principles. The recognition is, of course, a very rewarding outcome. However, it was never the objective in itself.

While we were confident in the quality of our T&Cs, we never viewed our win in such a competitive category as something guaranteed. It is one of the most dynamic areas in the industry, where even the smallest details often separate operators, and every aspect is subject to close scrutiny.

For us, this award is a validation of our approach. At the same time, we see it as a responsibility. Standards, regulations, and player expectations continue to evolve, so maintaining this level of quality requires ongoing effort and commitment. That’s exactly what we do at LuckyHills.

This is a particularly difficult category, from a player's standpoint, T&Cs are an afterthought, but they quickly become a point of contention if things do not go according to plan. How do you factor player expectations into building your T&Cs?

We see T&Cs as an integral part of the overall player experience. Our goal is to provide a transparent framework that builds trust from the very beginning. We don’t see T&Cs as just a legal formality or a document players turn to only when something goes wrong.

One of our core principles is maintaining a player-first mindset. That means looking beyond how the rules are written and considering how real players will experience them in practice. We prioritise clarity, minimise ambiguity, and avoid wording that could be interpreted in multiple ways.

We also continuously review aggregated data on real-world player cases. These insights help us identify potential friction points and refine both the wording and structure of our T&Cs. Ultimately, our goal is clarity and fairness — ensuring that players understand the rules before they play and that those rules are applied consistently in real situations.

Do you think that iGaming companies are beginning to pay heed to T&Cs, or are these the minutiae that must be completed without giving too much thought to what the industry average standard is?

We are seeing a clear shift across the industry, with more operators recognising the importance of high-quality T&Cs as player expectations around transparency continue to grow. However, in many cases, T&Cs are still viewed primarily as a compliance requirement.

At the same time, the gap between meeting minimum regulatory requirements and delivering genuine best practice is becoming more noticeable. An increasing number of operators are investing in making their terms fairer, clearer, and easier for players to understand.

From our perspective, that is where the most meaningful progress is taking place. T&Cs are increasingly being viewed as an important trust-building element of the player experience.

Even when the terms are, what you and we would agree, fair, do you think this really sinks in with players? Do casinos need to make a more conscious effort to help educate players on T&Cs, besides building these conditions with fairness in mind?

Fair T&Cs do not automatically translate into player understanding. There is still a clear gap between having well-structured terms and ensuring that players actually read and understand them correctly.

The challenge is not only fairness, but also readability and perception. Even transparent rules can feel complex if they are not supported by context or explanation. That is why educational touchpoints are becoming increasingly important.

We believe operators should invest more in educational touchpoints, such as simplified summaries, FAQs, practical examples, and guided explanations of key conditions. These tools help translate legal language into real-world understanding.

Ultimately, education reinforces fairness. When players understand the rules more clearly, trust increases, and the relationship between the operator and the player becomes stronger and more stable.

T&Cs are often written by legal teams with compliance in mind rather than readability. How do you strike the balance between protecting the business legally and producing something a regular player can actually understand?

Striking the right balance between legal compliance and readability is critical. We see it as a shared responsibility rather than something that sits solely with one department. For that reason, a close collaboration between legal, product, and UX teams is crucial for LuckyHills.

One of the key principles we follow is simplifying the language without changing the legal meaning. That often involves improving the structure, removing unnecessary complexity, and focusing on clarity rather than formal legal phrasing.

Has winning this award changed anything internally, has it prompted a review of existing terms, or reinforced confidence that your current approach is the right one?

Winning the award has primarily reinforced confidence in our current approach and encouraged us to continue refining it. It is a strong validation that our focus on fairness, clarity, and player protection is moving in the right direction.

Additionally, we do not see it as a final achievement. We treat it as confirmation that the standards we have established are effective and should continue to be maintained and refined.

The award also serves as motivation for continuous improvement. Our focus remains on making incremental refinements to maintain and further strengthen the recognisable quality.

Looking ahead, do you see industry-wide standardization of T&Cs as a realistic goal, and would that be a good thing for players and operators alike?

We believe partial standardization is realistic, particularly around core principles such as transparent and clear communication. These are areas where the industry can and should move towards greater consistency over time.

Operators work across different markets, regulatory environments, and product models. And that diversity naturally requires a degree of flexibility. That’s why operators should pay special attention to this flexible approach and its long-term benefits. From a player perspective, greater consistency in how key concepts are presented would improve understanding and trust.

For that reason, we see the most realistic outcome as shared principles rather than rigid standardization. For LuckyHills, it is a common baseline for fairness and clarity, combined with flexible implementation.
