Jody Bechtold, President of the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board, emphasizes the importance of certification in preparing counselors to effectively address problem gambling. She highlights the growing global awareness of the need for professionally trained specialists but cautions that attending training alone is not enough to fully equip counselors to meet the needs of problem gamblers. However, it is an important first step. As problem gambling increases, so does the demand for skilled professionals to provide support.
Q: Jody, you are the President of the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board. Can you briefly introduce the IGCCB’s body of work and its main areas of expertise and focus?
The IGCCB is focused on creating and maintaining high standards and quality for each of its certifications for addressing problem gambling and gaming across the globe. The IGCCB creates certifications that include education, training, supervision, exam, and direct practice hours to demonstrate someone has met the requirements for certification and is viewed in the field as an expert.
Q: How important is IGCCB’s certification process in preparing specialists to deal with problem gambling and related issues? Who benefits most from the certification?
Depending on the state and country, certification is becoming more important and endorsed as we continue to see an increase in gambling and gaming across the globe. Individuals with counseling and lived experience currently benefit from these certifications. Individuals seeking help for problem gambling and gaming can be assured they are working with individuals that have been thoroughly trained and educated on how to address these issues.
Q: Do you think that those currently involved in treating problem gambling fully understand the complexities of the issue, and how can the IGCCB help enhance their understanding?
Because of the strict requirements of the certifications, individuals are trained to help the individual, the family, and the community through prevention, treatment, and research. The IGCCB requires that people pass several requirements in order to become certified.
Q: What do you see as the most significant challenges gambling counselors face today, and how can the IGCCB assist in addressing these challenges?
The increase in problem gambling and gaming has created an increase in demand for help. The IGCCB continues to expand the number of people certified to meet the demands for services.
Q: The IGCCB now operates in a market increasingly focused on online gambling. Has this shift changed the way counselors work and the skillset they need to be effective in their care?
The Certifications are designed to address any shifts in the market and the required skillsets through the direct practice and supervision hours. No one can become certified by simply attending a training.
Q: You recently appointed Simon Vincze, Casino Guru’s Head of Sustainable & Safer Gambling, as a Member of the IGCCB’s Board of Directors. What unique expertise does Vincze bring to help further the IGCCB’s mission?
The IGCCB is very excited to have a board member join from the gambling industry. Simon’s knowledge and expertise will help guide developing new certifications for the Responsible Gambling industry as well as create and maintain partnerships between the board and specific operators.
Q: To close on a positive note, could you share a story or example where the IGCCB has made a significant impact and helped improve the quality of care for those struggling with gambling addiction?
Since the IGCCB does not deal directly with clients, we don’t have specific stories. We only manage the certifications of professionals.
