Woman starts screaming after winning $1m from scratch-off ticket

A woman was screaming with joy after beating the odds of 1 in 1.2m to win a life-changing lottery prize.

That’s the story of a Hendersonville woman, who scored one of the top prizes from the North Carolina Education Lottery’s LOTERIA MULTIPLIER scratch-off ticket.

$10 scratch-off ticket brings life-changing $1m prize

The incredibly lucky woman purchased her $10 scratch-off ticket at Rock Convenience on Chimney Rock Road in Hendersonville.

She selected the $10 LOTERIA MULTIPLIER ticket and initially didn’t think she had won anything.

Interestingly, the fortunate player nearly threw away her ticket before giving the benefit of the doubt.

The woman scanned the ticket she thought didn’t win at all and was shocked to realize she had just won $1m.

The odds of winning the top prize from LOTERIA MULTIPLIER are 1 in 1,232,580.

Keeping those odds in mind, the fortunate winner said that after seeing the life-changing prize, her heart started beating so fast.

"I started screaming," the winner said in an interview for an official with the North Carolina Education Lottery.

"I worked so hard in my life. I never thought this would happen," the winner exclaimed.

As is the case for large lottery prizes, the player was presented with the choice to either collect the entire $1m via annuity payments of $50,000 per year for 20 years or take home a one-time lump sum of approximately $600,000.

The winner selected the latter option and after the relevant tax deductions collected $432,063.

Asked about her plans for her newfound fortune, the Hendersonville woman said she will take care of her family.

Two top prizes of $1m each are up for grabs

The North Carolina Education Lottery rolled out the LOTERIA MULTIPLIER on March 3, 2026.

Each $10 ticket grants players a chance to win a prize between $10 and $1m.

While initially, there were a total of four top prizes of $1m each, after the most recent win, two remain in play.

A tier-two prize from the ticket wards $10,000 and the odds of winning such a prize are 1 in 410,860.

There are nine out of 12 tier-two prizes of $10,000 each still for grabs.

On the other hand, a tier-three prize awards $5,000 and there are nine such prizes in play.

Within the lower prize tiers, between $1,000 and $10, there are thousands of prizes up for grabs.

The overall odds of winning any prize from the LOTERIA MULTIPLIER scratch-off game are 1 in 3.63.
