Virginia man visits mom, wins $1m from scratch-off ticket

One lucky man who decided to give a $20 lottery game a try emerged as the winner of a $1m prize.

That's the story of a fortunate man from Virginia, who chose to remain anonymous after winning the top prize from the Payday Tripler game.

"I was in shock all day!"

Currently, in Virginia, lottery players who win $1m or more have the option to remain anonymous.

This is what the lucky man chose after scoring the first $1m top prize from the Virginia Lottery's Payday Tripler scratch-off ticket.

The winning ticket was purchased at the One Stop at 1305 W. Gretna Road in Pittsylvania.

Interestingly, the lucky man was in the area visiting his mom and decided to give the $20 scratch-off ticket a try.

To his surprise and shock, he won one of the game's top prizes.

After purchasing the ticket, the winner went back to his car to scratch it off.

Realizing that he had won the first $1m top prize, the winner said: "I was in shock all day!"

Just like with other big lottery prizes, the man had the option to collect the full sum via annuity payments or take home an instant, one-time cash option.

Unsurprisingly, the winner, whose identity may always remain a mystery, selected the cash option and collected $476,000 before the relevant applicable taxes.

Asked about his plans for his newfound fortune, the man admitted that he will use the winnings to help take care of his mom.

Payday Tripler offers two top prizes of $1m each

Each Payday Tripler ticket costs $20 and grants players a chance to win prizes between $20 and $1m.

After the most recent top prize win, now, two prizes of $1m each remain in play.

The odds of winning the scratch-off ticket's top prize are 1 in 408,000.

Besides the two $1m top prizes, a tier-two prize awards $20,000 and there are four out of four remaining in play.

A tier-three prize pays $6,000 and all five of those prizes are up for grabs.

Within the lower prize tiers, thousands of prizes between $600 and $20 are still in play.

The overall odds of winning any prize from the $20 ticket are 1 in 3.44.
