Vancouver man enjoys morning coffee, realizes he won CA$1m

A Vancouver man was enjoying his morning coffee when all of a sudden, he was shocked to realize that he had won a life-changing lottery prize.

That's the case for one player who scored the Lotto 6/49 prize of CA$1m ($736,300), the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) announced Thursday.

Lotto 6/49 drawing makes one fortunate man rich

The winner purchased his ticket at Petro Canada located at Hastings and Renfrew Street in Vancouver.

To his surprise and shock, he emerged as the winner of a CA$1m prize from Lotto 6/49's drawing on January 24, 2026.

Lotto 6/49 is a popular lottery game in Canada. According to BCLC data, in 2025, B.C. lottery players collected more than CA$71m ($52.3m) in prizes from Lotto 6/49.

Drawings of the popular nationwide game take place every Wednesday and Saturday after 7:30 PM.

Lotto 6/49's Gold Ball Draw grants players a guaranteed CA$1m prize, while the game's Gold Ball Jackpot starts at CA$10m ($7.4m).

On the other hand, Lotto 6/49's Classic Jackpot grants players a chance to win a life-changing prize of CA$5m ($3.7m).

The winner was in disbelief

Earlier in the week, the lucky player was just sipping his morning coffee when he suddenly felt an adrenaline rush like no other.

Surprisingly, it wasn't the coffee that had awoken him abruptly but rather the fact that he scored a life-changing CA$1m ($736,300) prize.

The lucky winner spoke to an official from the BCLC and recalled the moment: "I scanned the ticket and I saw the one and all of the zeroes. I didn’t believe it and then scanned (on the BCLC Lotto! App) to make sure I counted right."

Still in disbelief, the fortunate Vancouver man then visited the BCLC's website only to read that the winning ticket was indeed sold in Vancouver.

Wanting to make sure that he is indeed the winner one more time, the player then visited a grocery store. The result was still the same – he had won CA$1m ($736,300) from Lotto 6/49's draw.

With the thought of the life-changing prize sinking in, the lucky man admitted that he needed some time to decide what to do with his newfound fortune.

Undoubtedly, he will always remember the date January 24, 2026, when he scored a life-altering prize from Lotto 6/49.
