The statewide crackdown on illegal gambling in Hawaii continues.
After only recently, the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) arrested one person in an illegal gambling operation now another illegal gambling establishment was shut down.
The HPD has released details regarding the latest operation against an illegal gambling venue, which took place at a residence located on Kawaiahaʻo Street.
On site, officers executed a search warrant and uncovered more than a dozen illegal gambling devices, cash, as well as drug-related paraphernalia, a statement by the HPD confirms.
Overall, law enforcement seized $3,910 in cash along with an unspecified type and amount of drugs.
Notably, police also found and seized a total of 16 illegal gambling devices worth approximately $135,000.
Two suspects were also arrested, with the HPD confirming that the individuals were detained without incident.
"HPD remains committed to addressing illegal gambling operations that negatively impact the safety and quality of life in our communities," police explained in its statement.
The latest illegal gambling raid was completed by officers with the HPD, in collaboration with the Narcotics/Vice Division Gambling Detail.
Also assisting with the operation were officers from the Airport Operations Group, the Specialized Services Division, as well as the District 1 Crime Reduction Unit, Forfeiture Detail.
Law enforcement explained that a 29-year-old male from the 'Aiea area, along with a 58-year-old woman from the Kāneʻohe area, were arrested.
The two are facing charges for possession of a gambling device, as well as promoting gambling in the second degree.
Promoting gambling in the second degree is usually considered a misdemeanor and can be subject to a monetary sanction and/or jail time of up to one year.
On the other hand, possession of a gambling device is also a misdemeanor crime. Usually, people who are sentenced with this charge in Hawaii may receive a fine and/or up to one year in jail.
