Thanks to birthdays and anniversary numbers, a North Carolina grandmother won a six-figure jackpot.
The fortunate winner, a Bailey resident, beat the odds of 1 in 1 million to win the top prize from Cash 5, the North Carolina Education Lottery said Monday.
Cash 5 is a popular game in the state, offering players a chance to win a prize between $1 and a growing jackpot that starts at $100,000
In North Carolina, lottery players can participate in Cash 5 by buying tickets at retail locations, online via the Lottery's official website, or via the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.
Lottery games contributed $50m in grants to Nash County, the same county where the lucky jackpot winner lives.
These valuable funds helped build new schools and contributed to other major community projects.
The fortunate winner, a grandmother of four, purchased her winning ticket at Mr. S Tobacco and Grill on U.S. 264 in Sims.
The lucky woman's $1 ticket brought her Cash 5's life-enhancing $271,509 jackpot.
On Monday this week, the Bailey resident visited the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters located in Raleigh to claim her big win.
After the applicable state and federal taxes, the winner's bank account increased by $194,816.
In an interview with an official from the Lottery, the lucky grandmother admitted to using special numbers to win the Cash 5 jackpot.
"I use some family birthdays and my anniversary," the fortunate woman said.
Once she realized she had won the top prize from Cash 5, the grandmother immediately told her daughter.
"I said, 'Come in here, I think I won the Lottery.' I couldn't believe it," the woman admitted.
She did not confirm if she had plans for her newfound fortune.
