A Maryland lottery player found a winning ticket he previously misplaced, claiming $50,000 win days before expiration.
The Maryland Lottery confirmed in a press release that the fortunate winner is a Calvert County resident.
Although the lucky winner chose to remain anonymous, he shared his excitement about the latest windfall which he almost missed after misplacing the ticket.
The Calvert County man purchased a $4 Bonus Match 5 ticket for the game's drawing on July 12, 2024.
The man, who described himself as an avid sports fan and lottery player, bought his winning ticket at Shell on 20943 Point Lookout Road in Callaway.
To the surprise of the lucky man, he scored the Bonus Match 5 top prize of $50,000 from the drawing on July 12, 2024.
Selling the top prize winning ticket, the lottery retailer will benefit from a $500 bonus.
Purchasing six boards for that particular night's drawing, the Calvert County man matched all five winning numbers for a $50,000 top prize from the fourth board.
In addition, the very last board granted him an extra $400.
Speaking to Lottery officials, the Calvert County man said that he plays the lottery each week.
As a true sports aficionado, the man said that he uses the numbers of jerseys from his favorite sports teams for lottery games.
Playing the lottery frequently, the fortunate winner said that he has set a weekly budget for the activity and usually keeps winning tickets to use the prizes and buy new ones.
While that sounds like a solid scheme, the man admitted to sometimes losing or misplacing tickets.
This is precisely what happened with the $50,400 winning ticket that was left sitting in a container for several months.
Lucky for the Calvert County man, he remembered to check that particular container and claim the sweet prize only days ahead of the 182-day expiration deadline.
Asked for plans about the recently collected lottery prize, the man said that he intends to pay bills and keep the rest in a savings account.
