Maryland woman visits friend, buys lottery ticket and wins $100K

A woman who visited a dear friend was surprised by a life-enhancing six-figure lottery prize.

On Wednesday, the Maryland Lottery announced that one Frederick County woman scored a $100,000 prize from a popular scratch-off, purchased when visiting a friend.

The unexpected lottery prize was overwhelming

The winner was driving from Frederick County to a friend in Annapolis.

Along the way, she stopped a couple of times for gas and snacks and decided to try her luck, buying lottery tickets.

One of the tickets turned out to be a $50 winner and it was that ticket which helped her get the life-enhancing $100,000 prize.

After meeting her friend, the woman was heading back home when she felt thirsty and stopped at the 7-Eleven located at 611 Taylor Avenue in Annapolis.

"I’d bought a couple tickets by then, which was enough. But I was thirsty, so I looked for one more place to stop before I got on the highway," the winner said in an interview for an official with the Maryland Lottery.

This is when the fortunate woman decided to use the $50 won earlier that day from another lottery ticket to buy a $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-off.

Buying the $50 ticket, she headed to her car and decided to scratch it off.

Surprisingly, the $5,000,000 Fortune ticket turned out to be a $100,000 winner.

Recalling the moment, the woman said: "I’m glad I decided to scratch it in my car instead of there in the store. Because I just fell apart. If I wasn’t sitting, I would have fallen down."

The winner collected her unexpected windfall by visiting the Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

The woman, described as a computer technician, did not reveal if she had plans for her newfound fortune.

Four prizes of $100K and one top prize of $1m are up for grabs

Each $5,000,000 Fortune ticket costs $50 and it grants players a chance to win a prize between $50 and $5m.

While there is one top prize of $1m remaining in play, four tier-two prizes of $100,000 are also up for grabs.

The popular scratch-off ticket offers a tier-three prize of $50,000 and out of nine such prizes, five remain in play.

Within the lower prize tiers, between $10,000 to $50, thousands of prizes remain in play from the $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-off ticket.
