Lottery player in New York turns $20 into $1m

One West Monroe, New York, resident won a life-changing sum after purchasing a $20 scratch-off ticket.

Last week, the New York Lottery confirmed that an Oswego County player scored one of the top prizes from its Millionaire Maker game for a sweet $1m payout.

Millionaire Maker ticket makes another fortunate player a millionaire

The fortunate winner purchased their ticket at Kinney Drugs at 9543 US Route 11 in Brewerton.

To the surprise of the West Monroe resident, he won one of the remaining top prizes from the popular scratch-off ticket.

The odds of winning $1m from the Millionaire Maker scratch-off game are 1 in 1,089,650.

Fortunately for the lucky player, he was able to beat those odds and take home one of the game's top prizes.

The winner recently visited the New York Lottery to claim his big win.

He selected to receive a one-time lump sum payment of $651,000, after the relevant applicable taxes.

Despite winning the top prize, the fortunate man did not reveal if he had any plans regarding the unexpected windfall.

Scratch-off games represent an important part of the New York Lottery's portfolio.

During the fiscal year 2024-2025, scratch-off games generated $4,339,749,048 in total sales.

Providing vital funding to education, such games brought nearly $38m to school districts in Oswego County, the same County where the lucky winner lives.

Lottery players can win a range of prizes from the Millionaire Maker scratch-off game

Each Millionaire Maker ticket costs $20 per play and grants players a chance to win a prize between $20 and a top prize of $1m.

So far, 15 top prizes of $1m each have been paid out but five remain in play.

A tier-two prize from the Millionaire Maker scratch-off game awards $10,000.

The odds of winning a tier-two prize are 1 in 136,206.25 and there are 42 such prizes in play.

Players who win a tier-three prize from the $20 scratch-off would be looking for a $5,000 payday.

The odds of winning $5,000 are 1 in 9,541.59 and there are 612 such prizes in play.

Within the lower prize tiers, lottery players can win prizes between $2,000 and $20.

The overall odds of winning any prize from the Millionaire Maker ticket are 1 in 3.91.
