EuroMillions winner who saved a cop's life passes away after hit-and-run

• A man who saved a police officer’s life before winning a EuroMillions jackpot has died in a hit-and-run
• The suspected perpetrator was quickly apprehended by police and initially charged with several charges
• Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, a police spokesperson confirmed

Anthony Canty, 39, who won the EuroMillions £1m jackpot in May 2020 after giving a police officer CPR when they collapsed on a bus, has died in a suspected hit-and-run, British media outlets reported.

Canty won the EuroMillions payout on May 5, 2020, mere days after he helped the police officer. The incident took place on May 25, 2026, in Tiptree, Essex, while he was riding his bike.

Police were able to identify the suspected driver who hit Canty and led to the fatal outcome as an 18-year-old driver of a Ford KA, and have already apprehended them. The incident took place at 6:30 BST in Maldon Road, with the suspect fleeing the scene without calling authorities.

Officers were quick to act and were able to track down the suspect, initially arresting him on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs, as well as failing to stop, charges expected to be reviewed following Canty's death.

The police have issued a formal request for the public to step forward and provide any valuable information, including dashcam footage, that could help with the ongoing enquiries.

"He remains under investigation, and our enquiries continue," a police spokesperson said. Canty was a father of two.
