Dozens of individuals, suspected of being involved in a massive scheme that laundered money from illegal gambling in South Korea, were recently sent for prosecution.
The criminal ring, as announced by the local media outlet, The Chosun Daily, operated between January 2025 and January this year.
Investigation uncovered that the criminal organization laundered a whopping 590bn Korean won, or a sum of more than $444.7m.
Primarily, the proceeds derived from illegal gambling websites and the money laundering syndicate established a hierarchical structure that included various roles.
Besides the mastermind of the group, the syndicate had members holding roles such as managers, agents responsible for account transfers and suppliers of third-party bank accounts.
Overall, the group used nearly 200 loan accounts and, in their actions, to conceal the source of funds, they transferred money from one account to another. In some cases, the sums were split between many secondary and tertiary accounts.
Ultimately, the criminal syndicate’s goal was to successfully launder money from illegal gambling and collect a fee in exchange for their services.
Overall, 80 people have been arrested on suspicion of participating in the money laundering syndicate, the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency said.
One of the suspects, a man in his 20s, referred to as Mr. A, was described as the alleged mastermind of the criminal organization.
A total of 22 suspects, including the alleged mastermind, were sent for prosecution and face various charges for money laundering and organized crime.
The remaining suspects are going to face charges but will be released and must appear in court at a later period.
