Australian couple wins $20m jackpot, forgets ticket on fridge

A couple in Australia was sitting on a multi-million-dollar jackpot for days before realizing they had won.

On Tuesday, The Lott confirmed that an incredibly fortunate Brighton couple scored a life-changing AU$20m ($13.2m) jackpot from a recent Powerball drawing.

Draw 1529 produces a total of four division one winning entries

The winning grandparents hold one out of a total of four division one winning entries from draw 1529 from Powerball, held on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

On Thursday, numbers 9, 22, 23, 3, 13, 28 and 32, along with the Powerball number 9, were drawn.

The fortunate couple holds one out of two entries in Victoria. Powerball draw 1529 also saw one entry from Western Australia and Queensland.

According to The Lott, the Victorian grandparents purchased their winning entry from East Brighton Newsagency, 613 Hampton Street in Brighton.

They will be looking forward to a whopping AU$20m ($13.2m) prize.

The winning couple used the game's QuickPick option for a random combination of numbers

Interestingly, the couple's winning ticket was sitting on their fridge for several days before they checked it.

The Lott confirmed that the Brighton couple didn't register their entry with The Lott Members Club, which means that the Lottery had no way to contact the winners to notify them and had to wait for them to reach out.

When the couple finally spoke to a representative of The Lott, the wife said: "That’s insane! I’m in shock! This is unbelievable. We had no idea, and this whole time the ticket was just sitting on our fridge."

Moreover, the lucky winner added: "We’ve both been really busy, so we just forgot to check it. Oh wow. It was just a QuickPick, but I see my lucky number is here, and some family birthdays and anniversaries. It was meant to be!"

The fortunate grandparents admitted that they are still having a hard time believing that they have won such a life-changing prize.

The couple said that they have played the lottery for years but haven't purchased tickets very frequently.

With the thought of the multi-million-dollar win sinking in, the wife said that her plans for the future have radically changed.

She admitted that she hasn't decided whether she wants to retire or continue working.

When asked about the plans for the unexpected windfall, the couple said that they will share the jackpot with their close family.

"We’ve worked really hard all our lives. We’ll look after our children and grandchildren, and we’ll be able to buy a little house," the woman added.
