Only recently, the Dallas Cowboys hired Mike Pettine as an assistant to help the franchise's defensive coordinator, Christian Parker, during his first year.
While Pettine has solid experience and, in fact, came out of semi-retirement, people around the league criticized the Cowboys' decision, one NFL insider suggests.
In an exclusive interview with Casino Guru News, the award-winning NFL reporter and analyst, Jason La Canfora, discussed the Cowboys' recent decision to strengthen its defense, while highlighting league insiders who thought that an alternative defensive coordinator in the face of Wink Martindale may have been a better option.
"In the meantime, Jerry Jones went and plucked longtime NFL assistant Mike Pettine out of, I don't know, quasi-retirement and brought him in to help Christian Parker," the insider said early in the interview.
"I've got people in the league telling me they don't even like that decision. They feel like Wink Martindale, a longtime defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, a guy who has a lot of swag to him, a guy who players react to in a very visceral way," La Canfora added.
According to the NFL analyst, his sources in the league believe that Martindale could have reignited Dallas' defensive players and would have been a "better choice to bring in as a consultant."
La Canfora acknowledged that it is yet to be seen whether or not Pettine will end up being responsible for play calling, adding that such a development wouldn't come as a surprise.
The insider said that if the Cowboys don't pick Martindale, another team might use his experience to fix its defense.
"If you're looking for someone to come in and blitz a lot and be willing to sacrifice to get the quarterback down, he's your guy," he explained.
Finally, La Canfora said: "And that might be yet another Jerry Jones defensive mistake, picking the wrong consultant."
