49ers coach signs multiyear contract extension

Kyle Shanahan, the coach of the San Francisco 49ers, has signed a new multiyear contract extension deal with the franchise, ESPN confirmed on Friday, September 11, 2026. This means that Shanahan will not be releasing the team’s reins in 2027, when the pre-extension contract would have drawn the line.

Shanahan will remain at the helm of the 49ers as the new season is now underway

With the 49ers off to a strong start in the 2026/27 National Football League season, and the team emerging victorious against the Los Angeles Rams in a 27-7 rout, the team’s coach will remain on the job as San Francisco seeks a Super Bowl title.

The closest the 49ers came was in 2024, when, during Super Bowl LVIII, San Francisco conceded to the KansasCity Chiefs by three points for a final score of 25-22 in favor of the Chiefs.

As to the exact terms of the deal, they have not been disclosed, but Shanahan has been with the 49ers since 2017, and during this time he has helped the franchise continually improve its performance, winning three NFC West titles, two NFC Championships, and participating in four conference championship games.

The 2025/26 season only went a step further to burnish the man’s credentials as an adept coach who managed to pull together his team at a time when many of the main players were hampered by injury. Ultimately, Shanahan saw his team finish the regular season with a 12-5 overall record.

The playoffs saw the team defeated by the Seattle Seahawks in a lopsided 41-6 game, but the team still managed to advance first, defeating the Eagles in the Wild Card playoff game.
