Young Doyle Brunson and his transition from sports to poker

Doyle Frank Brunson was born on August 10, 1933, in Longworth, Texas. He had two siblings and, from a young age, proved his excellence in basketball and running. After graduating from Sweetwater High School, Brunson studied at Hardin – Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.

While he had the opportunity to play basketball professionally, his dreams of an NBA career were shattered after a leg injury. Brunson had a bachelor's and master's degrees. Even before his dream of an NBA career was cut short, he played five-card draw poker. In fact, his poker earnings helped him pay injury-related bills. Soon after, Brunson became a salesman.

Identifying that reading opponents and staying calm under pressure were among his skills, Brunson transitioned to professional poker and participated in games in Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas. But after one trip to Las Vegas, Doyle Brunson started to regularly participate in WSOP tournaments and has done so since its inception in 1970.

The poker legend had several near-death experiences

In the prime of his life, when he wasn't even 30 years old, Brunson was diagnosed with cancer. This happened after he had left his job as a salesman, and he was already making a living from poker. At 29 years old, doctors told Brunson he had only three months to live after uncovering a melanoma on his neck. In an interview for Poker.org, Brunson recalled the exact day he spoke to the doctors, saying: "I can never forget the words. He said melanoma is like a black corruption. You can see it with your naked eye."

After this ordeal, Brunson was sent to a cancer treatment center in Houston. However, after operating on him once again, the doctors were shocked to realize that the cancer malformation had disappeared. "They said sometimes they see one or two cases of spontaneous remission. They had no explanation for it," the legendary poker player said.

This by no means wasn't Brunson's only near-death experience. Throughout his life, he was also held at gunpoint during a robbery. In 1998, Brunson and his wife were robbed by two masked men in their Las Vegas home.
