South Korea's President sent a clear warning against criminal organizations, including groups involved in illegal online gambling, drug trafficking and other crimes, while praising the efforts of officers part of a dedicated unit that fights cross-border crime.
President Lee Jae-myung visited the Transnational Crime Special Response Task Force on Monday.
During the unexpected visit, the President spoke with active members of the Task Force, some of whom are located in Cambodia.
Quoted by the Chosun Daily, Lee Jae-myung said: "You are working very hard, living in harsh conditions, away from your families. The entire nation is grateful for your hard work, so you can be proud."
Not unexpectedly, the President thanked the Task Force agents, adding: "I should buy each of you a while chicken."
One of the officers, who participated in the call, asked the President for pizza.
The President's response was an order fora full budget for the Task Force agents, adding: "Ask us anything you need."
Besides the video conference, the President acknowledged a recorded decrease in the reports related to scams and fraud since the launch of the dedicated Task Force.
Lee Jae-myung explained that such criminal organizations are becoming "increasingly sophisticated."
Importantly, South Korea's President sent a clear warning to all cross-border criminal groups involved in online gambling, fraud, scams and other unlawful actions.
"Actively publicize the fact that anyone who touches Koreans will be ruined, including through cooperation with local Southeast Asian media outlets," he said.
The President's warning comes in the context of the ongoing fight against cross-border criminal syndicates operating across Asia and targeting the country.
Such groups are often involved in illegal gambling, money laundering, drug trafficking, forced labor, scams and other unlawful activities.
However, South Korea continues to actively collaborate with law enforcement agencies across Asia and internally to take down criminal groups.
