A sold-out ticket prompted a Michigan man to give another instant game a try and he will undoubtedly always remember this decision as it brought him a life-changing prize.

Late last week, the Michigan Lottery announced that one Tuscola County man won the first top prize from its Detroit Tigers instant game.

The winner wanted to double-check if he had indeed won $500,000 on a $5 ticket

Per the Lottery's announcement, the 57-year-old man chose to remain anonymous.

The man purchased his winning ticket at the Speedway gas station on 1001 West Caro Road in Caro.

The lucky Tuscola County man initially wanted to buy a Triple Red 777s ticket.

However, when visiting the retailer, the man was disappointed to see that the particular ticket he wanted was sold out.

Deciding to give another ticket a try, the man liked the $5 Detroit Tigers scratch-off game.

To his surprise, this decision brought him the game's top prize for a $500,000 payday.

In an interview for the Michigan Lottery, the lucky winner recalled the day he bought the winning ticket.

"I stopped at the gas station to buy a Triple Red 777s ticket, but they were sold out, so I told the cashier to give me a Detroit Tigers ticket instead," the man explained.

Moreover, the winner said: "It was hard to believe when I saw I’d won $500,000, but after looking the ticket over several times, I told myself it must be real."

The man then went on to sign the back of the ticket and then returned to the store so that a clerk could check it once again.

The 57-year-old man said that after the cashier scanned the ticket, she told him that he would have to visit the Lottery headquarters for this win.

"Winning $500,000 is an answered prayer and still hasn’t fully sunk in," the winner admitted.

Visiting the Michigan Lottery headquarters recently, the man claimed his winnings and admitted to planning to invest it and help his family.

Plenty of prizes remain in play from the Detroit Tigers ticket

Each $5 Detroit Tigers ticket grants players a chance to win a prize between $5 and $500,000.

After the first top prize was collected, now, two more such prizes remain in play.

A tier-two prize from the Detroit Tickets instant game awards $2,000 and there are six such prizes up for grabs.

The overall odds of winning any prize from the popular game are 1 in 3.65.
