A lottery player from North Carolina was recently surprised by a hefty prize.
On Wednesday, the North Carolina Education Lottery uncovered details regarding the fortunate winner.
A statement released by the Lottery confirmed that his name is Richard Markiewicz.
The Chatham County man tried his luck on Thursday by purchasing a ticket for the Lottery's popular game, Lucky for Life.
After purchasing the $2 ticket using Online Play, Markiewicz was pleasantly surprised by a hefty $25,000 a year for life prize from the lottery game.
The incredibly lucky Pittsboro resident matched correctly all five white balls on Lucky for Life's drawing last Thursday. As a result, he won the tier-two prize of $25,000 a year for life.
Markiewicz visited the North Carolina Education Lottery on Wednesday to claim his big prize.
As is usual for top lottery prizes, the Chatham County man was given the option to either receive $25,000 a year for the rest of his life or take home a lump cash sum of $390,000.
Not unexpectedly, the Pittsboro man selected the latter option.
Considering that both state and federal taxes are applicable to lottery winnings in North Carolina, the lucky winner's bank account grew by nearly $280,000.
Markiewicz did not disclose if he had any plans regarding the unexpected windfall.
Currently, Lucky for Life tickets can be purchased via Online Play or retailers across North Carolina.
This is one of the Lottery's six games that offer flexible purchase options, and its drawings take place every night.
The cost per ticket for Lucky for Life is $2 and each ticket grants players a chance to win a prize between $4 and a top prize of $1,000 per day for life.
The chances of winning a tier-two prize of $25,000 a year for life, just like the prize that was recently won, are 1 in 1.8 million.
On the other hand, the odds of winning the game's jackpot for $1,000 a day for life are 1 in 30.8 million.
A tier-three prize from Lucky for Life awards $5,000 and the odds of winning such a prize are 1 in 143,356.
The overall odds of winning any prize from Lucky for Life are 1 in 7.77.
