One lucky lottery player is on the lookout for a new car after a $5 ticket brought him a six-figure prize.
That’s the story of a Brunswick County man, who scored one of the top prizes from the North Carolina Education Lottery’s Double Your Money ticket.
The fortunate man, a Shallotte resident, decided to give the $5 scratch-off ticket a try.
He purchased his Double Your Money ticket from Minuteman Food Mart on Holden Beach Road Southwest in Shallotte.
After scratching off the ticket, the lucky player was incredibly excited to see that he had just won one of the top prizes for a $200,000 payday.
In an interview with an official from the North Carolina Education Lottery, the lottery player said that he thanked the store clerk that sold him the winning ticket.
"I told her she’s my good luck charm," the winner explained.
In disbelief, the Brunswick County man woke up on the day after he won the $200,000 top prize and checked the ticket again, hoping that the lottery windfall wasn’t a dream.
Upon claiming his newfound fortune at the Lottery headquarters, the winner said: "This is a big blessing. It’s coming at a very good time."
Asked about his plans for his newfound fortune, the man admitted that he wants to buy a new car and use some of the winnings for home renovations.
The $5 Double Your Money ticket was launched on August 29, 2025, offering players a chance to win a prize between $10 and $200,000.
The $200,000 won by the Brunswick County man marked the last top prize, which is why the Lottery will initiate ending the scratch-off game.
The odds of winning $200,000 from the Double Your Money ticket are 1 in 1,211,052.
In Brunswick County, education programs have benefited from $6.3m from lottery funds.
