A seasoned lottery player in Maryland was pleasantly surprised by two life-changing prizes after playing with the same random numbers on two tickets.
On Thursday this week, the Maryland Lottery confirmed that a Fort Washington resident, who chose to remain anonymous, won one of the top prizes from Pick 5 on two occasions, after using the same numbers on two different tickets.
The fortunate Prince George's County woman spoke to a Lottery representative, revealing that she enjoys playing the lottery but usually buys Pick 4 tickets.
The woman said that Pick 4 has granted her a range of prizes, including a hefty $5,000 win.
However, the seasoned lottery player only recently decided to try her luck with Pick 5.
To her surprise, she won the game's top prize of $50,000, twice, for a total payout of $100,000.
She deemed the unexpected windfall as "a dream and a blessing."
Giving Pick 5 a try, the Fort Washington resident decided to play with random numbers and looked at her car's odometer.
Using the last five digits, the woman tried her luck with two tickets.
Later on, the same day she purchased the tickets, the woman stopped by 7-Eleven at 9413 Livingston Road in Fort Washington as she needed some groceries.
This is when the fortunate player decided to scan the tickets and was shocked to realize that she had just won two top prizes of $50,000 each.
Remembering the moment, the woman said: "When I scanned my ticket, it said ‘$50,000 winner'."
"I was shook! I ran out of the store and went straight to my car to call my dad," she added.
The lucky woman was asked about her plans about the big win. The Prince George's County Lottery player admitted that she intends to spend the winnings wisely, helping her father, who had always supported her, paying some bills and paying off her car.
To win the top prize from Pick 5, players need to match five digits in the exact order.
A ticket with a $0.50 bet would pay $25,000, while the top prize for a $1 bet is $50,000.
The probability of matching five digits in the exact order is 1 in 100,000.
A tier-two prize is awarded to players who match five digits in any order with the probability of that happening being 1 in 20,000.
Matching five digits in any order with a $0.50 bet awards $5,000, while the prize for a $1 bet is $10,000.
The lowest prize a Pick 5 player can win with a $0.50 bet is $25 by matching the front two digits in the exact order or the last two digits in the exact order.
