A fortunate couple, who liked to treat themselves to lottery tickets, were surprised to win a six-figure scratch-off prize.
That’s the story of a Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia pair who scored one of the top prizes from the $5 Crosswords Color game.
The couple was grocery shopping on Friday and, true to their tradition, bought scratch-off tickets.
The lucky pair’s winning ticket was purchased at Harristown News and Casket Agency on 67 Drayton Road in Toowoomba.
Interestingly, the AU$5 ticket ultimately brought the recently retired couple a life-changing AU$100,000 ($70,000) prize.
In an interview for The Lott, the owner of the news agency that sold the top prize winning ticket, Sarita Sharma, said: "I am thrilled! When the customer returned in-store and asked for a hug, I thought she was congratulating me on my new baby. Instead, she hugged me, kissed my cheek and whispered that I’d sold her a top prize-winning Instant Scratch-Its ticket."
Sharma explained that the fortunate winner recently retired and described the prize as life-changing for herself and her husband.
When The Lott contacted the fortunate woman, she admitted that she had already received the money into her bank account.
"It’s amazing! I’m over the moon! Oh gosh, I just received the funds in my bank account - woo," the lucky player said.
The recently retired woman mentioned a tradition she and her husband have, which is buying lottery tickets whenever they go grocery shopping on Fridays.
Not only did the couple stay true to their tradition, but they admitted that they usually buy the same tickets.
After purchasing scratch-off tickets last week, the woman was playing with her dog, while her husband was still scratching one of the tickets.
This is when the husband asked her to guess how many words appeared on his ticket.
While the woman guessed six words, her husband replied that it was in fact 10 words, saying they won AU$100,000.
The fortunate player didn’t believe her partner initially but soon realized the win was real.
Asked about their plans for their newfound fortune, the pair admitted they plan to pay off their mortgage.
Finally, the Toowoomba couple said they don’t plan "anything crazy" to celebrate the life-changing lottery win.
