A lucky 60-year-old man saw a $20 scratch-off ticket turn into a life-changing $1m prize and he is now planning his early retirement.
That's the story of a Macomb County man who scored the first top prize from the Michigan Lottery's King Cashword instant game.
The fortunate lottery player purchased the winning ticket at the Kroger store, located at 16450 26 Mile Road in Macomb.
To his surprise, the $20 scratch-off turned out to be a top prize winner, bringing him a hefty $1m payout.
Speaking to an official from the Michigan Lottery, the Macomb County player said that he purchased the ticket from a self-serve machine.
The 60-year-old man admitted that while he initially scratched off the ticket, he thought that it won $5,000 but was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't the case.
"At first, I thought I won $5,000, and then I found another word to make 10 for a $1 million prize," the winner said.
The lucky man further added: "It was awesome!"
Visiting the Michigan Lottery headquarters, the fortunate player claimed the unexpected prize.
While the Macomb County man had the option to collect the entire prize via annuity payments, he picked a one-time lump sum of approximately $693,000.
When asked about his plans for his newfound fortune, the man admitted that he will now plan his early retirement and acknowledged that the prize is a huge blessing.
Each King Cashword scratch-off ticket grants players a chance to win a prize between $20 and $1m.
The overall odds of winning any prize from the $20 ticket are 1 in 3.28.
Considering that the Macomb County player's win was the first top prize to go down, now, two such prizes remain in play.
A tier-two prize from the popular game awards $5,000 and there are 18 such prizes up for grabs.
On the other hand, a tier-three prize awards players $1,000 and out of 609 such prizes, 401 remain in play.
Within the lower prize tiers in King Cashword, players can win a range of prizes between $500 and $20.
