A couple from Maryland, who have played the lottery for years, was only recently surprised by a life-changing win.
On Friday, the Maryland Lottery confirmed in a press release that a lucky Harford County couple, who chose to remain anonymous, won $1m from Mega Millions.
The incredibly fortunate couple purchased their winning ticket at the Wawa store in Bel Air.
The Harford County couple was initially hoping to win the Mega Millions jackpot.
At the time they matched all winning numbers but one, from the game's December 10 drawing, the jackpot was a mind-blowing $619 million.
While the two missed the grand prize, they still won a tier-two prize of $1m, which is undoubtedly life-changing.
Visiting the Lottery headquarters, the lucky couple was asked if they had any plans for the windfall.
"We're going to save and invest most of it. I hope to help my family, make a generous donation to our church, and ensure we have savings for the future," the wife explained.
When a Maryland Lottery official asked them if they would continue playing, the duo simultaneously said yes.
The couple remembered the day they purchased the winning tickets.
The wife asked the husband to purchase two lottery tickets for her and two for himself.
The husband visited the Wawa store to buy the Mega Millions tickets.
"We were hoping for the jackpot, but this is still such a blessing," the fortunate woman recalled.
Several days after the drawing, the husband decided to check the lottery tickets.
To his surprise and shock, one of the tickets belonging to his wife matched the winning numbers from the December 10 drawing for a tier-two $1m win.
"Floored, he rushed to wake me up. At first, I thought I was dreaming. I'm still speechless, but I feel so blessed to receive a gift like this," the woman remembered.
Each Mega Millions ticket costs $2 per play. The Megaplier option can be added for an extra $1.
Currently, lottery players in 45 US states, as well as the US Virgin Islands and Washington DC can participate in Mega Millions.
