Prediction market platform Kalshi has once again become the center of a new controversy, although not of the company’s making.
The popular prediction market operator has reportedly been misused by a longtime President Donald Trump teleprompter operator to place trades resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in gain for the person.
Kalshi has responded to an ABC News request for comment with the company's Head of Enforcement, Bobby DeNault, saying that the abuse was flagged early by the surveillance team and referred to the relevant regulator for further investigation.
The news was reported by ABC News, a media outlet, which cited people familiar with the matter in the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which has launched an investigation. The man, one Gabriel Perez, is reported to currently be settling the allegations against him.
Perez has been a technical assistant to the President and has operated his teleprompter since 2016. He may have won as much as $100,000, according to the outlet.
According to the CFTC, Perez had placed multiple trades over the course of three months, resulting in the six-figure windfall. Perez was even aware of President Trump’s tendency to go off the teleprompter and improvise.
In fact, CFTC’s investigation also revealed that Perez was similarly aware of this and would even back out of certain trades early to avoid losing money if he knew the President had skipped over a certain section.
The news comes amid growing wariness of political trading on prediction market platforms.
While President Trump has himself been caught in a similar pickle over thousands of stock market trades and the announcement that paid Truth Social members will get early access to the information he shares on his proprietary social media platform, an official White House spokesperson told ABC News that the White House subscribes to strict ethics guidelines.
Perez’s settlement talks are advancing, with the teleprompter not to face criminal investigation as prosecutors have given up on the idea, and the man himself acknowledging that he had placed at least certain of the trades.
Previously, aUS soldier was arrested because he allegedly placed trades on military action involving US armed forces in Venezuela.
