Betway has launched both its regulated sportsbook and online casino in Alberta, Canada, the second province to switch to a private-license model in the country.
As a result, the popular brand will now be offering odds and games of chance to players in the province, building upon its momentum from Ontario.
The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) confirmed the news on Monday, adding that Betway Canada has been cleared and added to the province’s list of operating sports betting and online casino sites, along with Golden Tiger Casino.
With the latest expansion, Alberta’s regulated sports betting and online casino market has reached 30 licensed entities since the official launch in July. Betway Canada is joining a competitive market that is already being divvied up by the likes of FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars - all experienced North American operators.
Bet365, another European outlier, is also fighting for share, but the license list does not end there, as others are expected - including international gaming and betting brand Stake, which is also close to securing a license and launching its own. The brand has a registration with AGLC but still needs a commercial agreement with AiGC.
Betway is not the only brand owned by Super Group that has registered to operate in the local market, with four other such brands already available, among which are Jackpot City, Royal Vegas, Ruby Fortune, and Spin.
Super Group continues to expand in Canada, more than a year after it announced that it is exiting the United States.
However, the current list is still not what local experts expect for the market, with Alberta's iGaming minister, Dale Nally, forecasting up to 70 operator sites launching in the market when it reaches its full capacity.
Betway was previously available in Alberta when the private licensed model was still a grey area, and no official ruleset existed to allow these operators to accept customers or pay local tax.
The change in regulation has allowed those same formerly grey market operators to make the switch and enter Alberta in full. Not all will be taking up the province on this, but the most prominent and trustworthy brands users have come to know have.
In the meantime, Betway may have made the right call withdrawing from the Brazilian regulated market ahead of its launch, given recent events that saw the market killed overnight.
