NFL insider Jason La Canfora reveals why Philadelphia is already evaluating future QB options

The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for the 2026 NFL season, and they picked Jalen Hurts as their starting quarterback.

Still, the popular NFL franchise is already thinking about long-term quarterback options as one NFL insider suggests.

Jason La Canfora, the award-winning NFL reporter, insider and analyst, said in a recent interview for Casino Guru News that the Eagles are already exploring long-term quarterback positions, outlining the team is closely evaluating the strong 2027 quarterback draft class.

"Philadelphia is going to scout and watch and evaluate this 2027 college draft class at the quarterback position, which looks to be very strong," he said.

Moreover, La Canfora continued: "And I had multiple general managers tell me in the offseason, if Brendan Sorsby was allowed in the supplemental draft, that the Eagles may have put a second round pick in for him, a second-round tender to try to get Brendan Sorsby and start developing him as their next quarterback."

The NFL insider and analyst spoke to numerous executives involved in quarterback evaluation, including people he knew for decades, who acknowledged the starting potential of Cole Payton.

Considering this potential, according to La Canfora, Payton won’t be "going anywhere" and remain with the Eagles.

While that may be the case for Payton, the same doesn’t apply to the veteran Andy Dalton, who may become expendable, the insider continued.

"Andy Dalton is probably the odd man out. Andy Dalton, maybe you get a late-round pick for it," La Canfora said, acknowledging that there’s plenty of time for that matter to get resolved.

He added that Tanner McKee demonstrated exceptional preseason performance which reaffirmed his role as a reliable backup, who could "come in and back up in a pinch."

La Canfora spoke once again about Payton, saying he looks like a long-term developmental player, who would get on the field, but it is unlikely to happen this year.

"And Jalen Hurts, is he in Philadelphia in 2027," the award-winning reporter and analyst asked, responding that Hurts would have to "play really well to make sure that’s the case."
