Cairns had also divorced a couple of times. In August 2021, he faced his biggest personal challenge after suffering a major heart attack that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Chris Cairns gambling controversy

In 2010, the Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner, Lalit Modi, accused Chris Cairns of match-fixing. In a post on Twitter, Modi alleged Cairns has been involved in match-fixing in 2008. The famous cricket player consequently sued the IPL commissioner for libel. Notably, Cairns, told a British court that he has never engaged in match-fixing. Ultimately, he went on to win the legal dispute against Modi.

However, that wasn't the end of Chris Cairns' legal woes. Late in 2013, an ICC investigation into match-fixing once again alleged that the professional cricket player was involved in unlawful activities. Allegations against Cairns claimed he attempted to manipulate games while he was captain of the Chandigarh Lions in the Indian Cricket League.

To make matters worse, Lou Vincent, a former New Zealand cricketer who had previously admitted to match-fixing, claimed that Cairns reached out to him and proposed matches manipulation. Moreover, another cricketer, Brendom McCullum, also made similar claims, telling the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit of the International Cricket Council that Cairns allegedly approached him for match-fixing.

In light of those allegations and the Modi libel trial, Chris Cairns faced perjury. It is worth saying that Cairns has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and no investigation or evidence released credible information that proved his potential involvement in any match-fixing or manipulation attempts. As announced by media reports at the time, Cairns denied match-fixing allegations during his perjury trial.

When asked in a London court about match-fixing, Cairns said that he has never been involved in any such activities and never even considered it. In the end, he was acquitted of all charges of perjury in a decision announced on November 30, 2015. Despite the acquittal, the years of controversy and legal battles could not be erased. Chris Cairns' legal case became an example of the broader risks related to professional sports and betting, especially during high-profile international competitions.
