  • A $5 scratch-off ticket brought a hefty $200,000 prize to a Polkton, North Carolina, grandmother
  • The lucky winner was on a break from work when she decided to give the 5 Times Lucky game a try and won one of the outstanding top prizes
  • Two top prizes of $200,000 remain in play, along with smaller in size prizes from the $5 scratch-off

A grandmother in North Carolina, who tried her luck with a $5 scratch-off ticket, was stunned by a six-figure top prize.

On Thursday, the North Carolina Education Lottery confirmed that an Anson County woman scored one of the remaining top prizes from its 5 Times Lucky scratch-off game.

The winner thought she won $20, but was shocked after revealing a top $200,000 prize

The lucky woman purchased her winning ticket at Marathon Food Center located on U.S 74 East in Polkton.

The Polkton resident, speaking to an official from the Lottery, admitted that she was on a break from work when she decided to buy a lottery ticket.

Once she started to scratch off the $5 ticket, the woman said that she expected a prize much smaller in size.

Seeing a $2 and a 0 initially, the Anson County grandmother thought that she won $20. "I saw a two and zero so I thought I won $20," she said.

However, once she discovered that her prize was actually $200,000, the woman said she felt "stunned."

"This is really going to come in handy. It's a blessing," the lucky grandmother said.

Earlier this week, the grandmother, who has more than a dozen grandchildren, visited the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters to claim her big prize.

After the applicable federal and state taxes, the woman saw her bank account increase by $143,501.

Asked about her plans for her newfound fortune, the woman admitted that she will share the winnings with her family.

Many prizes remain in play from the $5 scratch-off game

Each 5 Times Lucky scratch-off ticket costs $5 per play and grants lottery players a chance to win a prize between $5 and $200,000.

Undoubtedly, this was the Anson County grandmother's lucky day, considering that the odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,216,440.

Out of a total of five top prizes of $200,000 each, only two remain in play.

A tier-two prize from 5 Times Lucky awards $10,000 and the odds of winning such a prize are 1 in 608,220.

There are five prizes of $10,000 remaining in play from the popular $5 scratch-off game.

On the other hand, a tier-three prize from 5 Times Lucky awards $2,000 at odds of 1 in 152,055 and out of 40 such prizes, 21 remain up for grabs.

Within the lower prize tiers, between $500 and $5, many more prizes remain in play.

The overall odds of winning any prize from the 5 Times Lucky ticket are 1 in 4.28.
