Fearmongers be damned – Artificial Intelligence is not necessarily here to cull the white-collar herd, especially when ChatGPT, the world’s most buzzworthy AI app, has just contributed to a woman’s lottery jackpot win in Michigan.
Tammy Carvey, 45, of Wyandotte, secured a $100,000 win from the Powerball after she turned to ChatGPT to help her figure out what numbers she should be placing on the next drawing.
Well, the numbers – 11, 23, 44, 61, and 62, with a Powerball 17, apparently worked for her! At first, Carvey even thought she had won less - $50,000, but she soon realized that, because of the Power Play feature, she had actually doubled the total payout!
The virtual assistant selected the numbers for her, while assuring her that there was no reason why those numbers needed to be any better than anything she could have picked herself.
Regardless, the September 6 drawingof the game turned out to be a major surprise for Carvey, who found out that her numbers had indeed won! She purchased the ticket from the Michigan Lottery website and was beyond herself with the win, posing for a photo-op and flashing a big smile.
The win was only publicized recently, with the Michigan Lottery announcing the anecdotal win:
"Tammy Carvey turned artificial intelligence into a real-life win when she won a $100,000 Powerball prize with a set of numbers generated by ChatGPT!"
Carvey is not an avid lottery player, or at least not a Powerball player per se. In her own admission, she only ever plays the game if the jackpot is past the $1-billion mark.
"I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers and those are the numbers I played on my ticket," Carvey added in a matter-of-fact voice.
Many lottery players are embracing ChatGPT and other AI tools to draft numbers – while it doesn’t change the odds and their chances of a win, it certainly makes for a fantastic headline.
