A lottery player from Louisiana, who was visiting New York, was surprised by a life-changing million-dollar prize.

The Alexandria resident scored the first top prize from the New York Millionaire scratch-off game, the New York Lottery announced Wednesday.

The winner beat the odds of 1 in 2m to win the game's top prize

Visiting New York, the lottery player from Louisiana decided to give the New York Millionaire scratch-off game a try.

The winning ticket was purchased at Citgo Krishna Food at 133 Jefferson St. in Monticello.

To the surprise of the Alexandria resident, he won one of the game's top prizes for a $1m payday.

Undoubtedly, this was the lottery player's lucky day, considering that the odds of winning the $1m top prize from the New York Lottery's New York Millionaire ticket are 1 in 1,976,400.00.

Only recently, the lucky player visited the New York Lottery to claim his big win.

Instead of annuity payments for the full sum, the player chose to receive a one-time lump cash sum.

As a result, the Alexandria player's bank account increased by $436,171, following the applicable taxes and withholdings.

The player did not reveal if he had any plans on how to spend his newfound fortune.

Prizes between $5 and $1m await New York Millionaire players

As North America's largest and most profitable lottery, the New York Lottery continues to generate funds that benefit public schools across the state.

For the 2023-2024 fiscal year alone, the Lottery contributed $3.8bn.

When the New York Lottery first launched its New York Millionaire scratch-off, there were a total of four top prizes of $1m each.

After the most recent win, now, three top prizes of $1m each remain in play.

A tier-two prize from the $5 scratch-off game awards $2,000 and the odds of winning such a prize are 1 in 988,200.00.

While there have been five prizes of $2,000 paid out so far, three such prizes are up for grabs.

Within the lower prize tiers, lottery players can win prizes between $500 and $5.

The overall odds of winning any prize from the New York Millionaire scratch-off game are 1 in 4.44.
