Fortune cookie helps Kentucky woman win $50,000

A lucky woman in Kentucky, who had visited a Chinese restaurant and picked up a fortune cookie, was surprised by a hefty $50,000 win on a $5 bet.

Earlier this week, the Kentucky Lottery confirmed that a Lexington woman scored $50,000 from its popular instant game, Golden Snake Triple Play.

The lucky winner admitted to being an occasional lottery player.

Recently, she was out for dinner with her family at a Chinese restaurant when she saw a fortune cookie belonging to her daughter.

Using the numbers found inside, the woman decided to try her luck and use them for a Powerball ticket.

After buying her Powerball ticket, the Lexington woman visited the Kentucky Lottery's Instant Play page and tapped on Golden Snake Triple Play.

Betting $5, the woman was given a chance to select a Bonus Game from the options Fortune Cookie Bonus, Fan Bonus and Firecracker Bonus Game.

Not unexpectedly, she gave the Fortune Cookie Bonus a try and seconds later, she was surprised and shocked by the $50,000 win that appeared on her screen.

"I almost always choose the Fortune Cookie Bonus. I just happened to choose that one. I just hit it and there it went," the lucky woman said.

Sitting in front of her laptop in disbelief, the woman said she wanted a second opinion, despite the winner notification popping up on her screen.

"Oh my gosh. I told my husband, ‘You might want to look at this and see if I’m seeing this right.’ He couldn’t believe it and asked, ‘what did you do now?'," the winner said.

Only recently, the woman visited the Kentucky Lottery to collect her $50,000 prize.

After the applicable taxes, the woman's bank account increased by $36,000.

Sharing her excitement, the Lexington winner said: "Not bad for a $5 spin."

When a lottery official asked the woman if she had plans about the $50,000 windfall, she admitted to planning to save it.

The woman confirmed that her husband will be retiring soon and while they have already taken care of their house, truck and van, the lottery windfall will be a "nice addition" to their savings.

Undoubtedly, this was the woman's lucky day, considering that the odds of winning $50,000 from Golden Snake Triple Play on a $5 bet are 1 in 2,000,000.
