A 47-year-old man from Wichita, Kansas, is facing charges after allegedly engaging in proxy betting on behalf of other people.
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced charges against the suspect earlier this week.
The case is prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Lauren Watson and was investigated by agents from the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission.
While working at the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane, the suspect allegedly acted as a "bookie" or a proxy/agent for placing bets on behalf of other people.
In addition, the 47-year-old man allegedly tried to have other employees join the activity.
Allegedly, the suspect encouraged others to place bets through him and asked employees to help him with collecting money from such bets.
Such actions are against the established gambling laws in Kansas that prohibit proxy betting.
The 47-year-old suspect was arrested on multiple charges for his alleged involvement in illegal commercial gambling and posted a $25,000 surety bond.
He is scheduled to appear in court on March 12, 2026, according to a press release by the Kansas Attorney General.
Overall, the suspect is facing five charges, including one count of Solicitation to Commit Commercial Gambling, one count of Attempted Unlawful Wagering-Proxy Betting, as well as one count of Unlawful Wagering-Proxy Betting and two counts of Commercial Gambling.
Depending on what charges the suspect is found guilty of, if any, he may receive a short jail sentence if he is a first-time, non-violent offender.
A suspended jail sentence is also possible, along with fines and orders to cover court-related costs.
The suspect may also be sentenced to probation between 12 and 24 months.
However, in case the suspect's actions are proven to be organized, profitable and ongoing, he may stay behind bars for 1 to 2 years and receive a large fine.
It is worth noting that the 47-year-old man is considered innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
