Damon Jones pleads not guily
  • Damon Jones maintains innocence in the corruption case of the century for the NBA
  • Jones is accused, alongside others, of having passed information to bettors to help them win wagers
  • He is also allegedly tied to recruiting high-stakes players for a private, rigged poker game organized and run by the mafia

Damon Jones, one of several high-profile NBA insiders, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he helped recruit athletes and bring them to a high-stakes poker game, which was run by the Mafia and also rigged.

Jones maintains innocence in what could be the biggest betting scandal in the NBA

He similarly denied charges that he had helped leak sensitive information about the league’s inner workings, undisclosed reports about player availability and health, and other information that influenced betting activity, based on reporting by The Associated Press, which reported on Jones’ decision to argue his innocence in the case.

Jones was originally arrested in October, and he is part of around 34 people named in the case, which involves other prominent NBA players and a coach. However, Jones’ case stands out, as he is said to have been tied to both the high-stakes poker game while also the leaking of insider information about league players, notably LeBron James.

Essentially, federal prosecutors are now claiming that Jones knowingly and purposefully used his behind-the-scenes knowledge and direct information to sell information that was not known to the public to sports gamblers, affecting the outcomes of games.

At least one game has been specified – a clash between the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks, which took place on February 9, 2023. Jones has been released on a $200,000 bond. The Jones scandal is not the only one to raise questions about the integrity of sports and sports betting in the United States.

Porter is not the last case to rock the world of big sports

After the lifetime ban of Jontay Porter, most considered the issue to be resolved, but there have apparently been serious breaches of trust in the NBA, which has put Adam Silver, the commissioner, in a difficult position.

An endorser of sports gambling, Silver, has tried to try and mitigate the impact, issuing new rules and encouraging teams and sportsbooks to work with the league to avoid repeat instances.

In the meantime, the UFC has faced a similar issue, with a recent fight from last week flagged as corrupt, following Isaac Dulgarian’s alleged throw of the fight to secure a betting outcome.
