Four Texans have each won $1m or more after they have purchased scratch-off tickets across the Lone Star State.
Residents in Spring, San Antoni, Haltom City and Baytown have all scooped a grand prize each, making for one of the most auspicious events in the lottery’s recent history.
The Texas Lottery provided further details on who the winners were, with a San Antonio resident securing $1,000,000 after winning the first of 10 top prizes for the Million Dollar Loteria game. The ticket was purchased at Palo Alto Express.
Another seven-figure winner was secured by a Spring resident who purchased their ticket at Time Saver Food Mart in Spring, and the award was the sixth of 10 grand prizes available.
A Haltom City resident managed to win as much as the previous two tickets, securing a $2,000,000 payout after playing in the Millionaire’s Club game and purchasing the winning ticket at Nick’s Corner Mart in Arlington.
Last but not least, a Baytown resident turned their own ticket from the Mega Millionaire game into a winner, the second of four top prizes worth $1,000,000.
Texas’s lottery has been going strong despite a general opposition to most forms of gambling in the state.
Presently, there is no regulated sports wagering or commercial casinos in the Lone Star State, with lawmakers appearing determined to continue and resist efforts to change the status quo.
Prominent casino operators, including the Las Vegas Sands Corp., have been pouring money into local Political Action Committees (PACs) in a bid to sway legislators, but to no avail so far.
In the absence of most forms of regulated gambling, the Texas Medical Association has urged the state to raise the age for accessing prediction markets, which offer sports event contracts often compared to sports betting, to 21.
