A new study from the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs has set out to test public attitudes towards sports gambling and gambling legalization in the state. The survey has arrived at some interesting conclusions, having interviewed 1,200 people and accounted for a 2.38% margin of error.
The main takeaway is that the majority of Texans are in fact very open to the idea of gambling legalization, and supporters of both sports gambling and Las Vegas-style casino resorts are in fact a majority.
The largest share of the support goes for the legalization of casino resorts, with 74% of Texans saying that they would back the legalization and construction of destination resort casinos.
The survey comes just in time as Gov. Greg Abbott had told the Houston Chronicle earlier this week that he would himself not object to a bill that makes this a possibility, and should such a draft law reach his desk, he would put his stamp of approval on it.
As to attitudes towards other forms of gambling, 60% of Texans do favor the legalization of online sports gambling, which is still a notable number. Another 56% of respondents said that they would also favor having sportsbooks on-site in Texas stadiums and arenas.
These numbers are further borne out by GeoComply’s own estimates that has been tracking data from the state, suggesting that a large number of people are actively looking to explore sports betting as a viable entertainment opportunity.
Even Gov. Abbott acknowledged that sports betting is on everyone’s mind and that some people must bet illegally using online websites, for example.
The future of Texas gambling is yet unclear with lawmakers remaining laggard despite strong public approval for the issue along with strong support from businesses and local sports franchises.
The Texas Sports Betting Alliance is expected to push forward with a proposal of its own as to how legalization could happen. Another popular piece of legislation is Senate Joint Resolution 16. Behind-the-scenes efforts to legalize both sports gambling and casino resorts are ongoing.
