Nebraska may become the latest state to offer online sports betting as soon as mid-2027.
That’s contingent on two initiatives successfully passing the ballot on November 3, 2026.
There are two separate ballot measures that, if passed, would permit online sports betting across Nebraska.
Those are Initiative Measure 440 and Initiative Measure 441.
Nebraska residents will be able to vote in favor of or against each of the initiatives during the 2026 General Election.
Initiative 440 proposes changes to the Nebraska Constitution that would permit online sports wagering across the state.
On the other hand, initiative 441 proposes the establishment of a regulatory framework for online sports betting.
Per 441, the Nebraska State and Gaming Commission would assume the authority to regulate online sports betting.
It is worth noting that if one of the proposals fails, online sports betting wouldn’t be possible.
Currently, Nebraska offers casino gambling and sports wagering via the state’s racetracks.
If initiatives 440 and 441 successfully pass on November 3, the state would permit online sports betting as long as the players are located within state lines.
One major aspect of the legalization of online sports betting is that tax proceeds from the activity would benefit the Property Tax Credit Cash Fund.
Nebraska is among the states with the highest property tax rates on owner-occupied homes in the country, and legal online betting is expected to help ease that burden, supporters of the legalization claim.
According to supporters, in the next decade, the allocation of approximately 70% of the tax revenue from online betting would provide nearly $170m in relief on property taxes.
In contrast, opponents claim that online sports betting puts a casino-like entertainment in the pocket of every resident across Nebraska.
At the same time, opponents argue that the estimated $170m in relief from online betting in the next 10 years is marginal, considering the property tax burden is an estimated $5bn annually.
Ultimately, it will be up to the voters to decide on the future of online sports betting and determine whether or not Nebraska would become the latest state to offer the activity in 2027.
