Light & Wonder, the creator of Rich Little Piggies, has one-upped Zeroo Gravity, a mobile game developer, after the plaintiff proved in a court of law that the latter had copied elements from its widely popular franchise.
Light & Wonder’s complaint alleged that Zeroo Gravity knowingly and purposefully used prominent signature elements from its game to ensure that 3 Stuffed Swine, a game released in April 2024, would have a better chance of succeeding on the market, tapping into player familiarity with the distinct piglet characters.
Light & Wonder similarly attempted to resolve the case amicably and without litigation, issuing a cease-and-desist letter to Zeroo Gravity, but the matter quickly ended up in court, although it’s not immediately clear at whose discretion.
Zeroo Gravity has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and insisted that its games are its own, developed with extensive in-house resources. This defense has failed to impress the US DistrictCourt for the Northern District of California, where the complaint was filed in July, and which moved quickly to examine the case under the Copyright Act.
Light & Wonder is now seeking a permanent injunction hoping to stop Zeroo Gravity from marketing the game to players and generating profit from 3 Stuffed Swine, citing concerns that the company would further infringe on the developer’s copyrighted materials.
Light & Wonder has pronounced itself prepared to defend its intellectual property and the win is an important step forward on the legal front for the company which is hemmed in from multiple lawsuits itself.
Just recently, Aristocrat sought and successfully obtained an injunction against Light & Wonder’s Dragon Train games, which the former alleges have been developed with Light & Wonder using extensive knowledge of Aristocrat’s games and tapping into sensitive information.
Aristocrat argued that the type of documents and knowledge used were copyrighted materials, and had been developed and attained at the costs of significant resources that Light & Wonder could afford not to pay because it had the information readily.
Aristocrat has won an injunction and is also accusing Light & Wonder of trade secret misappropriation and copyright infringement. Light & Wonder is similarly facing another lawsuit from Evolution, a popular developer of live casino games.
Evolution alleges that Light & Wonder has similarly filed a lawsuit in May, with the Nevada District Court, alleging that Light & Wonder used confidential files containing the math that was available in Lightning Roulette to build RouletteX and PowerX games, its own titles.
