The gambling regulator in Ontario, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), announced that it selected Dr. Karin Schnarr, a senior executive with extensive experience in different industries, to serve as its new Chief Executive Officer and Registrar. Confirmation regarding the new appointment came Monday and will see Dr. Schnarr assume her new role with the AGCO effective from September 18, 2023, a statement reveals.
Taking the helm at the gambling regulator, Schnarr will replace its outgoing CEO and Registrar, Tom Mungham. Back in March this year, Mungham announced his plans to retire from the role with AGCO. The new CEO and Registrar of the AGCO, delivers extensive experience and a wide skillset, making her the perfect fit for the new role.
"The AGCO and its Board of Directors are excited to welcome Dr. Schnarr to the organization and extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to AGCO’s outgoing CEO and Registrar, Tom Mungham, who announced his intention to retire from the agency in March 2023," reveals a statement released by the AGCO.
Currently, Dr. Schnarr holds a PhD in Strategic Management (Corporate Governance), as well as an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Additionally, she also holds a Master of Arts in English Literature from Queen’s University along with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Waterloo.
Before joining the AGCO, Dr. Schnarr was on the Board of the Kids Health Foundation and was also a member of the iGaming Ontario Board of Directors. Ultimately, she is a seasoned expert with significant experience within different governmental agencies and ministries and holds unique skills and knowledge from different industries and sectors.
Recently, Schnarr held the role of Vice-Chair of the Waterloo Regional Police Services Board. Her professional background includes a Chair of the Board role with the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario.
Schnarr is an Associate Professor with the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University. Throughout her extensive career at the university, she held the role of Director of MBA and BBA Programs and was also a part of its Board of Governors and Senate.
Earlier this year, the AGCO announced it imposed penalties against unlicensed operators. As the gambling regulator for Canada's most populous province, the Commission is authorized to enforce monetary fines if it uncovers breaches of the established regulations and also actively monitors the retail and online gambling market.
