ACMA goes after 5 new illegal sites in Australia

• ACMA has been unflagging targeting illegal gambling websites since November 2019

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) continues to monitor for compliance with the country’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001, targeting individual websites that have been breaching the law by offering their sports gaming and iGaming products to local customers, and without the prerequisite license.

In the latest enforcement action, five websites were named by the regulator, including SlotLounge, Betzillo, FastSpin99, Spinit, and PokiesPros. All five websites are said to have breached local gambling laws and have, as a result, been issued an Internet Service Provider block.

The measure was introduced in November 2019, when the first round of blocks were handed down, and has culminated in 1,322 gambling websites, affiliates, and even suppliers, ending up on the list as of today.

ACMA also used the latest blocking to remind consumers to stay vigilant about gambling websites and check if they are legal. In case they are not, customers are urged to file a complaint for the regulator to review.

While ACMA has been consistent in reviewing websites and issuing blocks, it has been a fairly slow going for the regulator, which has had to go through every individual complaint and has been limited to issuing several blocking orders at most every month.

Regardless, ACMA continues to push against the illegal gambling sector at a time when Australia does not seem likely to change its attitude towards online casinos.
